What does energy look like?
What does it feel like?
My work explores a world in which energy takes on a more obvious, visual form. If we could see the energy that courses through our bodies, out of our fingertips, and into a handshake, a paintbrush, or a home-made meal, how would that awareness broaden our experience? If we could visualize the power that flows through us and transforms our surroundings, with or without intention, how would that appear?
The transformational aspect in this line of thinking is exhibited through my use of mixed media. I’ve used web-like structures both as a motif for connection, and as a nod to my namesake “Charlotte’s Web”. When those webbed structures are combined with a source of energy such as light, the environment is transformed. We see the webs magnified in the form of shadows that allow us to experience a new atmosphere which is greater than the sum of its parts.
When we enter the installation we are both impacted by and impacting the environment, casting dynamic shadows of our own as we move across the space. We create a physical representation of the energy I’m exploring. Whether that energy is expressed through the art in this exhibition, reverberates into the earth below us with a footstep, or fills a crowded room in the form of an infectious laugh, its existence is evident in the fact that we ourselves and our environments are always changing.
